More than 15 years ago, the Fitzjohn family adopted a brindle staffy cross pup named Murphy from Dogwatch. Just three months old at the time, Murphy was brought home to keep their older dog Pumpkin company. From the very beginning, he showed himself to be calm, clever, and just a little aloof — not the most affectionate puppy, but one with a spark that soon blossomed into a deep and joyful bond.
Murphy has grown into what his family fondly call The Best Adventure Dog in the Entire World. His life has been full of shared experiences: countless walks to the river, hikes up mountain peaks, campfires, nights curled up in tents, and thousands of balls thrown. He’s been the steadfast companion through holidays, house parties, and everyday routines, always ready for the next adventure.
Along the way, Murphy’s quirky personality has kept his family laughing. He perfected the art of sulking if he wasn’t invited on a walk. He proudly dropped hedgehogs at their feet in the hope of a game of fetch. He once made the mistake of doing a giant poo in the Ashley River swimming hole, and he had a distinctive “stalking approach” on the beach — creeping slowly toward other dogs in a way that looked dramatic to bystanders, only to break into a happy tail wag and playful greeting at the last moment. Through all these moments, he brought joy, mischief, and unwavering loyalty.
Now, at more than 15 years old, Murphy’s family are cherishing the twilight years. Arthritis and health challenges mean the big adventures are fewer, but the joy is still there in the little things: short strolls, big sniffs, clever tricks, many treats, and the comfort of simply being together.
“Murphy, you have made our lives so much better,” his family say. “You’ve been our rock and little brother in hard times. We are so lucky that you were the pup Dogwatch brought out for us to meet. We’re better people for having you in our lives — and certainly happier ones.”
Murphy’s story is a moving reminder that rescue dogs bring love and companionship through every stage of life. Puppyhood may be filled with energy and discovery, but the golden years have their own special kind of magic. For the Fitzjohns, life with Murphy — from beginning to now — has been nothing short of a gift. They encourage you to consider adopting a Dogwatch dog, and enjoying sharing life through all it’s stages with one of these special pups.
“Let’s hear it for Dogwatch, for giving these dogs the chance to become old boys and old girls. Let’s hear it for the elderly pups!”
With love and gratitude,
The Fitzjohn Family
