Suki’s journey is a special one for Dogwatch — and one that proves just how extraordinary deaf dogs can be.
Suki came to us as a puppy in July 2021. Sweet, playful, and full of spark, she was also born deaf. That meant her early months required patience, consistency, and plenty of love. While in foster care with our staff member Rachel, Suki learned all about life in a home, the big outside world, and even picked up her own version of dog sign language for cues.
After 16 months in our care, Suki’s perfect match came along. In November 2022, she headed home with Sharon — and it’s been a love story ever since.
Her Mum Sharon says:
“Her deafness hasn’t slowed her down one bit! She’s eager to learn and especially loves her agility classes, with the tunnels as her clear favourite. Off-lead she checks in regularly and her recall is excellent. We go on so many adventures together, and I’m so grateful for the effort Rachel poured into her.”
Sharon also explained how recall training worked for Suki:
“I taught her to look at me regularly as we walk, then introduced a hand signal for recall. After that, training was basically the same as for any other dog.”
These days, Suki’s life is filled with joy — from hiking trails all over Canterbury to agility classes and simply enjoying every moment with her mum. She’s smart, affectionate, and deeply bonded to her person.
And the best part? Once you get to know her, you forget she’s deaf. She’s just Suki — full of energy, love, and personality.
Deaf dogs like Suki may experience the world differently, but with patience and love, they can live the most wonderful, joy-filled lives. She’s living proof of that.
