Opie was deeply loved by his previous owner, but sometimes loving a dog means making incredibly difficult decisions. Due to changes in circumstances, they were no longer able to provide Opie with the environment and accommodation he needed. Wanting to put Opie’s welfare first, they made the heartbreaking decision to surrender him to Dogwatch.

What made Opie’s journey especially unique was that his previous owner continued to foster him while we searched for his perfect match. This allowed Opie to remain in a familiar environment while helping us learn more about him, his needs, and the type of home that would suit him best. They were even able to help introduce Opie to his future family, ensuring his next chapter started with love and support from everyone involved.
When Opie entered the Dogwatch programme, his friendly nature quickly won over everyone he met. He was social, affectionate, and had a wonderful personality. He was simply waiting for the right people to come along.

Meeting his forever people
After a wonderful meet and greet involving his previous owner, our team, and his future family, it quickly became clear that something special was happening. The connection was immediate, and it was love at first sight. His adopters were kind, patient, and had a great understanding of dog ownership, making them the perfect match for Opie.
His adopters say it was his friendly nature and the way he bonded with them so quickly that made them realise he was the right dog for their family. The moment he passed his cat assessment and settled beautifully during his home visit, they knew he was coming home.
Since then, Opie has truly blossomed.
“He’s a completely different dog now. We’re getting to see his goofy side and hearing him use his voice more. He’s become very attached to us.”
These days, Opie’s life is full of all the things every dog deserves. He enjoys walks, treats, plenty of playtime, visits with his mum’s dogs, and endless cuddles on the couch.
One of his favourite games is throwing his toys around and giving them a good shake, and his family say he has plenty of personality. He dances when they come home, gives what they describe as a little smirk when he’s happy, and when he gets really excited, he sneezes and zooms around the house.
He even once tried to sneak into Nana and Grandad’s car in the hope of going on a playdate.
It was a second chance for Opie.

Having Opie in their lives has brought companionship, laughter, and a reason to get out and exercise. Watching him grow in confidence and become comfortable in his new home has been the most rewarding part of their journey together.
Their advice to anyone considering adoption is simple:
“Give your dog time. Don’t expect them to be comfortable straight away. They need time to learn that you’re safe and that this is their new home. The more time you give your dog, the more you will be rewarded with love.”
Stories like Opie’s remind us that sometimes the kindest thing an owner can do is put their dog’s needs first, and that when people work together for a dog’s best interests, wonderful new beginnings are possible.
