Do you remember Diesel?
When Diesel first arrived at Dogwatch, he had only been in our care for a week when his future family came in to meet some of our available dogs. In fact, Diesel was never even on the list of dogs they were meant to meet that day.
Diesel came to Dogwatch under very special circumstances. After an animal lover heard that he had been abandoned, they stepped in to help. While waiting for a space to become available at the shelter, they made sure he was fed, watered, walked, and cared for. Thanks to their kindness and compassion, Diesel was safe until we were able to bring him into our care as an emergency intake.

Although his past was uncertain, it quickly became clear that Diesel had an enormous capacity for love and trust.
Our team member Charlotte had a feeling he might be a good match for one particular family, despite him still being very new to the shelter and understandably nervous around people, particularly men.
As Charlotte was introducing him, Diesel quietly walked over, sat down with his back to his future adopter, and leaned backwards against him in what could only be described as a complete act of trust. It instantly captured the hearts of both him and his mum, and that single moment changed everything.
Because his family had chosen to adopt from a shelter, they already knew there might be challenges ahead. But as they quickly discovered, Diesel was pretty close to perfect.
His only real hurdles were some excitement around other dogs and pulling on the lead during walks. With support from the Dogwatch team, including a training session with Behaviour Adviser Deb, the family were given the tools and confidence to help him succeed.
From the very beginning, Diesel showed just how affectionate he was. During his first meetings and home visits, all he wanted was to be close to people.
Diesel when he arrived at Dogwatch
His family say:
“Diesel has settled beautifully into our home. During the first few weeks, he always seemed to ask permission for everything. He would wait to see if he was allowed on the couch, the bed, or even into different rooms. Over time he became more confident and comfortable, and now truly feels at home.”
These days, Diesel’s life is full of all the things every dog deserves.
His mornings begin with breakfast and a walk, where he continues to work on his lead skills and dog manners. His days are filled with games, snuffle mats, fetch, tug, training sessions, and plenty of time with his family. Late at night, after his adopter returns home from work, Diesel is always ready for another walk and some extra cuddles before bed.

One of the things his family loves most about him is his incredible gentleness.
He waits patiently at the door when people arrive, carefully moves out of the way when someone is carrying something, and even gets off the bed to allow the sheets to be changed before climbing back up. He seems to understand gestures, routines, and household manners with very little guidance.
But perhaps his favourite thing of all is simply being close to his people.
Unlike many dogs who only tolerate cuddles, Diesel actively seeks them out, leaning his entire body against his family and gently nudging them whenever the cuddles stop.
He also has a rather cheeky habit. Every day he watches his adopter leave for work through the front window, and when he hears the car return, he checks to make sure it is really them before pretending he wasn’t waiting at all.
His family describe him as the child everyone pours their love into.

“Diesel has helped brighten each of our days. We can always turn to this goofball and all of our problems and stress take a back seat. We would have missed out on everything that Diesel is if we hadn’t chosen to adopt, and he would have missed out on the love, adventures, and happy life he deserves.”
Stories like Diesel’s remind us why adoption matters so much. A dog who had once been abandoned was given a chance by a kind member of the public, supported by our team, and ultimately found exactly where he was meant to be.
Sometimes the right dog is not the one you came to meet. Sometimes they’re the one sitting quietly beside you, placing all their trust in a stranger and hoping for a second chance.
We’re so proud of you, Diesel. Thank you for reminding us that some of the very best matches are the ones nobody expected.
