Do you remember our loveable giant, Doogie? He came to us in July 2024 from Christchurch City Council Pound, where he had been a bit of a frequent flyer. At 45kg he’s a big boy — and our team and volunteers quickly fell in love with this gentle giant.
Doogie spent eight months waiting for his forever home, and in April 2025 his special person finally arrived. Kirsten fell head over heels for him, and together they began a new life in Ashburton.
Six months on, Kirsten says it feels like Doogie has been part of her family “FUR-EVA.” Describing him as “so relaxed he’s horizontal most of the time,” she’s grateful every day for her easygoing companion.
Doogie has collected a long list of nicknames — Doogie-star, Doogielicious, Dump Truck, The Schnoz, even Dumble-dog — and yes, he has his own re-worded theme song! He’s also found his favourite spots: sunbathing on his beanbag or stretched out on the outdoor table he’s claimed as his personal lounge.
He’s made plenty of friends too — from his “aunties” at the vet clinic who insist he drops by for cuddles, to the team at The Dog House daycare where he’s a weekly regular. He’s even learning new games, like scavenger hunts and “find it,” proving himself clever as well as cuddly.
Doogie has his quirks (cats and lawnmowers are mortal enemies, while lakes are irresistible), but he’s thriving in his new routines. From morning walks to lazy afternoons in the sun, he’s settled beautifully into his forever home.
Kirsten sums it up perfectly: “Doogie is certainly the best-looking and most well-behaved man I’ve ever had the pleasure of living with.” 💛
