A forever home for Hank

Do you remember our gorgeous boy Hank, who featured on Seven Sharp back in July?
We have the best news — he’s been adopted and has finally found his forever home!

Hank first came to Dogwatch in November 2024 from the Christchurch City Pound. At just two years old, he was unsure and overwhelmed by the change in surroundings. It was clear he’d need time to settle and learn to trust our team.

For the next eight months, our staff worked patiently to help Hank rebuild his trust. They spent quiet time with him, offered treats, and helped condition him to wearing his harness and going out on walks. Gradually, Hank began to settle and feel more comfortable. Over time, his spark returned — and he went from an unsure boy to one of the friendliest, snuggliest dogs at the shelter!

Because the busy kennel environment could be overwhelming for him, Hank earned himself an office spot — spending his days snoozing beside staff and joining team meetings as an honorary Dogwatch employee. His goofy personality and affectionate nature quickly made him a staff and volunteer favourite.

Vet visits and dog reactivity still posed challenges, so finding the right home took patience. But in August 2025, a great match came along — Scott and Hannah. It wasn’t all smooth sailing – Hank had to learn how to respect his cat siblings’ space, and his adopters learned to take things at Hank’s pace.

But now, Hank is living his best life — king of the castle in his new home, surrounded by love and enjoying daily walks. His adopters say he’s settled beautifully and continues to bring joy to their lives every day.

Here’s what his adopters say:

“Once again, thank you for hooking us up with this sweetheart of a dog. We’ve had a great first evening with him — he’s currently sleeping next to me, dreaming (hopefully good dreams) with his legs twitching. He’s been fantastic and is already such a special part of our lives — a real credit to the work your whole team does with the dogs of Dogwatch.”

Hank’s story is a beautiful reminder that with time, patience, and love, even the most uncertain dogs can rediscover trust — and happiness. We couldn’t be happier for you, Hank. You’re living proof that second chances — and a lot of love — can change everything ❤️
