Matty is a mystery boy with a big story to share — and an even bigger heart. This 45kg Rottweiler x Labrador came to us from the South Canterbury region and has quickly become a favourite around the shelter. Despite his size, he’s convinced he’s a teacup pup, always ready for cuddles and affection.

Playful, friendly, and full of personality, Matty is a true social butterfly. He adores people and has a lovely, peaceful play style — though sometimes he forgets just how strong he is! He’s absolutely toy-obsessed and is rarely seen without one in his mouth — whether he’s showing it off, carrying it around proudly, or inviting you to play.

Matty would love a home with plenty of space, a confident family. He hasn’t been cat-tested yet, but we think he has all the makings of a great family dog. Due to his size and enthusiasm, he’d be best with dog-savvy children who can help manage those playful zoomies.

Matty has socialised really well with a few of our female and male dogs, he is calm and confident making him a great leader for his other shelter friends who need some guidance.

He’s still learning his lead manners — sometimes strong, occasionally stubborn — but always eager to please. After a long time in shelter and pound environments, Matty will need patient guidance as he learns how to live in a home setting. He’s been great around the shelter but can find it hard being left alone for long periods, so a home where someone is around during the day would suit him best.

With structure, consistency, and plenty of love, Matty will thrive and become the loyal, gentle companion he’s meant to be.
