At Dogwatch, we believe that every dog deserves a second chance – and some of our adopted dogs are proving just how incredible rescue dogs can be, not only as loving companions but as valued members of the community. River and Magic, two special Dogwatch alumni, are making a difference by visiting rest homes in Christchurch, spreading joy and companionship to elderly residents.
River’s Journey
River’s story began when she was found abandoned, wandering the streets of Bromley. Picked up by the Christchurch City Council Pound, she waited for her owners to claim her – but no one came. Thankfully, she was transferred to Dogwatch, where her future took a brighter turn. In May 2022, at just eight months old, she was adopted by Amelia and Geoff, who fell in love with her at first sight.
Now, River has flourished into a calm, social, and loving dog, bringing comfort to residents at Essie Summers and Cashmere View Retirement Village. Alongside her owner, Amelia, River makes regular visits, offering gentle companionship and wagging tails to brighten the residents’ days. She also joins Amelia at speaking events, showcasing the impact of rescue dogs in the community.
Magic’s Mission
Magic’s story is another testament to the resilience and kindness of rescue dogs. He was found wandering the streets of Ashburton and taken in by the Ashburton Council Pound. When no one came forward to claim him, he was transferred to Dogwatch, where his journey to a new life began. In March 2023, Barbara and Stefan opened their hearts and home to Magic, who was approximately two years old at the time.
Since the beginning of 2025, Magic has been visiting residents at Palm Grove Care Centre & Village, where he brings warmth and smiles with his friendly nature. But he’s not the only one in the family spreading joy – his Dogwatch sister, Luna, who was adopted by Barbara and Stefan as a puppy in 2020, also makes visits to The Village Palms. Together, they prove that rescue dogs are not only loving companions but can be wonderful therapy dogs, enriching the lives of those they meet.

The Impact of Rescue Dogs in the Community
River, Magic, and Luna are shining examples of how rescue dogs can give back to the community. Their visits provide comfort, companionship, and a sense of connection for elderly residents, many of whom may not be able to have pets of their own. The presence of a friendly dog can spark conversation, encourage reminiscence, and bring simple moments of happiness to those who need it most.
Their stories also highlight the incredible potential of rescue dogs. Once abandoned or unwanted, these dogs have found loving homes and now play important roles in people’s lives. They remind us that every dog, no matter its past, has the ability to love, heal, and make a difference.
At Dogwatch, we are proud to see our adopted dogs thriving and giving back. Their journeys inspire us to continue our mission of rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming dogs in need. If you’re considering adopting, know that you’re not just giving a dog a second chance – you could be welcoming a future therapy dog, adventure companion, or best friend into your life.
